Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans

Research projects involving human participants must receive clearance by the Huron University College Research Ethics Board (HUC REB) to ensure ethical standards are met. Researchers at Huron, both faculty members and students, are expected to uphold the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2).

Researchers are encouraged to complete the TCPS 2 Tutorial Course on Research Ethics (CORE), and to be familiar with the Policy and Procedures before completing their HUC REB submission.

In order to conduct research with human subjects, researchers must receive clearance by the Huron University College Research Ethics Board (HUC REB).

Course instructors organizing student research projects for course credit should refer to Section 5.0 of Huron Research Ethics Policies and Procedures.

Applications must be made using the Request for Ethics Approval form.

Researchers are encouraged to use the attached templates for their Letter of Information, Consent Form, and Debriefing Form.

Huron University College Research Ethics Board for Course-Based Research Ethics Approval

Submissions to the HUC REB should be made according to the schedule below and will receive a response within 2 weeks. If the submission deadline falls on a weekend or a public holiday, submissions will be accepted until noon the next business day. Submissions made in July-August will be reviewed as needed, and researchers should anticipate that responses may take up to 4 weeks.

Amendments

Researchers who need to make modifications to an ongoing study that received approval from the HUC REB should do so using the Amendment Request form.

Approval is required for changes to any part of the study, including procedures, participant sample and recruitment methods, data collection instruments, etc.

This form should be used to make changes within the scope of the original study, not to introduce new studies related to the original research.

Unanticipated Problems

Researchers who encounter unanticipated problems in the course of their research should report this to the HUC REB using the Unanticipated Problem Report.

All researchers must provide a report to the HUC REB annually, and notify the REB when the project is complete. This can be done using the Annual Review or Termination Report.
